Topic
This study examines how the 1965–66 anti-communist purge in Indonesia affected family formation in Java, using regional variation in Communist Party support as a quasi-experimental design. Analyzing 2010 census data, we find a delayed but lasting decline in birth rates in Communist strongholds, driven by population loss and reduced marriage rates. Despite partial recovery, the birth deficit persists, highlighting the long-term demographic and economic impacts of political violence.
