The InSIDE Lab (Insubria Information & Data for Economics) is a research and scientific support laboratory dedicated to the study and application of statistical and econometric models. Its main goal is to provide qualified assistance at every stage of quantitative analysis: from the theoretical construction of models to their estimation, interpretation, and the communication of results.

• The lab places strong emphasis on the mathematical foundations underlying the models to be estimated, recognizing that a solid theoretical base is essential to ensure reliability and coherence in empirical applications. Among the tools employed are: probability theory, approximation theory, advanced simulation algorithms, numerical optimization techniques, and machine learning methods.
• A distinctive feature of the InSIDE Lab is its critical reflection on the foundations of statistical and econometric inference, addressing the epistemological implications of the techniques used and promoting a deeper understanding of the limitations and potential of modeling.
• Another key aspect is attention to the understanding of the assumptions and premises behind models and their potential non-neutrality—thus linking model selection and interpretation to critical hermeneutics.
• The lab does not merely apply existing methods but is actively involved in the development of new methodologies, both computational and inferential. Methodological innovation is considered a key component in tackling the challenges posed by modern data and complex economic phenomena.
• Applications of the methodologies developed include empirical analysis of micro- and macroeconomic, social, psychological, demographic, and environmental data; evaluation of public policies; and the management, integration, and analysis of big data—including complex climate data—with the aim of supporting evidence-based decision-making.
• Finally, lab members adhere to best practices in data analysis: using open-source software whenever possible, responsibly sharing data, promoting the replicability of studies, and preregistering research projects. These principles ensure transparency, reliability, and scientific rigor.

To this end, the InSIDE Lab works in close collaboration with research centers and similar laboratories around the world.

Il Dipartimento di Economia (DiECO) ha ottenuto il riconoscimento di Dipartimento di Eccellenza dal Ministero dell’Università e della Ricerca, un risultato che sottolinea l’impegno e la qualità delle attività didattiche e di ricerca. Questo traguardo riflette la capacità del Dipartimento di affrontare le sfide contemporanee nel campo dell’economia e di sviluppare risposte pratiche e innovative alle problematiche globali.

L’attività di ricerca del Progetto si concentra su due aree complementari. La prima esplora l’innovazione in una prospettiva sistemica, analizzando gli ecosistemi imprenditoriali a livello nazionale e internazionale, e il loro impatto sull’economia, con un focus sulle dinamiche della ricerca e sviluppo (R&D), in modalità collaborativa (open innovation), e sul ruolo della finanza innovativa.

La seconda area riguarda le decisioni e i comportamenti degli individui in contesti di incertezza. Si analizzano i processi decisionali in scenari di instabilità, in termini sia descrittivi sia normativi, e gli effetti degli interventi di policy, esplorando anche i fattori psicologici e sociali che influenzano le scelte, con particolare attenzione alle credenze erronee, come le fake news. Inoltre, sarà esaminata la legislazione nazionale ed europea riguardo la gestione dell’incertezza.

Per realizzare il progetto, il Dipartimento ha dato vita a tre strutture di ricerca specializzate. La prima, l’InExEc Center, è focalizzato sull’economia sperimentale e si avvale di esperimenti sul campo e in laboratorio per studiare e analizzare i comportamenti economici degli attori di mercato. La seconda, il MP4I Lab, si dedica allo studio delle pratiche manageriali e degli ecosistemi innovativi, con l’obiettivo di comprendere come favorire l’innovazione nelle imprese e nelle organizzazioni.

Infine, l’InsIDE Lab si concentra sulla gestione e sull’analisi dei dati economici, fornendo supporto strategico per le decisioni in ambito economico.

Negli ultimi dieci anni, il corpo docente del Dipartimento di Economia dell'Università degli Studi dell’Insubria è stato potenziato grazie a un attento processo di reclutamento di qualità. Questo ha permesso di rafforzare specifiche aree tematiche e di integrare in modo efficace la didattica con le attività di ricerca. Il potenziamento delle risorse umane è stato focalizzato su ambiti strategici, su cui si fonda il progetto di sviluppo del Dipartimento.

In particolare, l’area di economia e management dell’innovazione ha trovato un significativo impulso grazie alla sinergia con il corso di laurea magistrale GEEM (Global Entrepreneurship, Economics and Management) e agli accordi di doppio titolo, che offrono agli studenti l’opportunità di formarsi in contesti internazionali. Inoltre, l’area di economia comportamentale e sperimentale ha beneficiato dell’organizzazione di scuole estive e della collaborazione con visiting professor provenienti da università estere, creando un ambiente di scambio scientifico che ha arricchito la qualità della ricerca.

Questi sviluppi hanno avuto un impatto tangibile sulla produttività scientifica del Dipartimento. Infatti, negli ultimi dieci anni, la percentuale di pubblicazioni su riviste con ranking SJR (SCImago Journal Rank) è aumentata del 31%, mentre quelle su riviste con Impact Factor (IF) hanno registrato un incremento del 33%. Questo evidenzia l’alta qualità della ricerca svolta all'interno del Dipartimento, che continua a crescere in visibilità e prestigio nel panorama accademico.
